According to Sports.ESPN, Parker’s car crashed through a containment barrier and then into a wall. An investigation is underway to determine whether Neal’s car crashed into the wall or whether a drogue chute failed to open. ESPN quotes an on looker, David Farrah, who said it seemed that the chute (designed to slow the vehicle down) failed to open.
“It looked like the chute just didn't open and he couldn't stop. The car was just crushed. It was tragic,” said David Farrah.
Police and the NHRA parkers car and driver are conducting an investigation.
Fans have left their condolences on the NHRA Facebook site and some have called into question the safety of the track. One user remarked that there have been two deaths in three years at the track.
